GOUVERNe Project Partner No. 5

Created in 1957, IEFE initially concentrated its research activity on energy policy, with a focus on natural resource economics, technological development, industrial economics and public utility regulation.  The evident links of these topics to environmental issues resulted, over the past 15 years, in the complementary development of environmental studies.  The research activity of IEFE is by declaration policy-oriented, and very often conducted in strong cooperation with institutional actors, professional associations and industrial actors.  In the environmental sector, the main areas of activity can be divided into four categories:
  • evolution of public service industries relevant for environmental policies (e.g. water, waste)
  • evolution of environmental policy institutions and instruments (e.g. voluntary instruments)
  • evolution of industrial environmental policies
  • more traditional applications of environmental economics.
IEFE is held by a Directive Board where a wide number of representants of institution, interest groups and industry in the environmental, energy and hi-tech industries are represented. These external actors contribute financially to the budget of the Institute and play a role in the setting of research agendas. Most research is done under contracts with institutional actors and industry, very often with a multi-client approach. This approach, that represents a typical feature of IEFE’s projects, has guaranteed during time a well-recognized autonomy and authoritativeness within the policy community.
The Director is Prof. Sergio Vaccà.  The responsible person for the Environment Division is Prof. Giorgio Giorgetti.  Nearly 12 researchers are permanently occupied in activities concerning the environment.  In particular, Antonio Massarutto, Michele Fontana, Giulia Pesaro and Paola Amadei have been involved or are currently involved in projects regarding water resources.
